How can you navigate growing data opacity in researching and understanding China's actions at a global stage? Join the Kissinger Institute on China and the United States (KICUS) at the 浪花直播 Center and AidData on Tuesday, March 26th, as they present 鈥淏RI, Ports, and Debt: Getting the China Facts Straight.鈥

AidData housed at the Global Research Institute at William & Mary has dedicated their time to studying China鈥檚 outbound investments through pioneering 鈥楾UFF鈥欌擳racking Underrepresented Financial Flows. Through their comprehensive data collection and research, the team at AidData has been able to study a vast array of topics, from the BRI to AI and China鈥檚 future bases.

In July 2023, AidData released a report on 鈥楬arboring Global Ambitions: China's Ports Footprint and Implications for Future Overseas Naval Bases鈥, identifying the top 20 ports abroad to receive the most money from China and eight potential locations for future Chinese bases. A November 2023 report鈥斺楤elt and Road Reboot: Beijing鈥檚 Bid to De-Risk Its Global Infrastructure Initiative鈥欌攆inds that the BRI has remained as the largest source of international development financing, but that its structure in providing lending has shifted. Most recently in December 2023, AidData collaborated with RAND to produce a new dataset and report on China鈥檚 AI exports.

In the first part of the event, Dr. Ammar A. Malik, Director of AidData鈥檚 Chinese Development Finance Program and his team will present their findings, discuss how they conduct their research, and consider the future applications of their work. Following this presentation, a panel鈥搃ncluding Kissinger Institute Director Robert Daly鈥攚ill discuss the impacts of AidData鈥檚 research within the beltway and how data-driven research on China is shaping policymaking in DC and beyond.

Light refreshments will be provided.
