Governor Geraldo Alckmin of S茫o Paulo on Brazil鈥檚 Economic and Political Outlook in an Unpredictable Election Year

Elected four times to lead S茫o Paulo, Brazil鈥檚 richest and most influential state, Governor Geraldo Alckmin is widely expected to run in October鈥檚 presidential election. This will be a second attempt to reach the Pal谩cio do Planalto for Alckmin, who lost to President Luiz In谩cio Lula da Silva in 2006. Despite his low polling numbers鈥攁nd widespread rejection of establishment politicians鈥攕easoned political analysts believe the governor could emerge as a strong centrist candidate backed by the middle class and the business community, and someone who鈥攊f he wins鈥攃ould build the alliances needed to govern in Brazil鈥檚 coalitional political system. However, the race is highly unpredictable and will likely remain so for months.

On March 7, the Brazil Institute and the  hosted a conversation with Governor Alckmin. Following his presentation, a panel of experts discussed his remarks and the economic and political outlook for Brazil in this critical election year.
