Dr. Christoph von Marschall is Chief Diplomatic Correspondent of 鈥濪er Tagesspiegel鈥, the leading daily in Berlin, a frequent guest on TV shows and an expert for Central Eastern Europe, the US, Transatlantic Relations and Great Power Competition. He studied East European History and Political Science in Freiburg, Mainz and Cracow (Poland) concluding with a PhD on Polish history. 1989 he joined 鈥濻眉ddeutsche Zeitung鈥 and covered the regime changes in Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. Since 1991 he works for 鈥濪er Tagesspiegel鈥. He was Editorial Page Editor (1995-2005), Washington Bureau Chief (2005-2013) and a member of the White House Press Corps. 2017/18 he was the inaugural Helmut Schmidt Fellow of the Zeit Foundation and the German Marshall Fund of the US, based in Washington DC. He had again access to the White House now under President Donald Trump and wrote a book about the future of Germanys Foreign Policy.

鈥淩ethinking the Idea of the 鈥榃est鈥: Why its Future Could Lie in the (Far) East.鈥
Project Summary
The goal of the project proposal is to rethink the idea of the 鈥濿est鈥. For decades, it has meant the transatlantic alliance of democracies in Europe and North America. But the future of the 鈥濿est鈥 lies in the (Far) East. Americans and Europeans should extend their definition of the 鈥濿est鈥 beyond the transatlantic alliance of democracies in Europe and North America to the democracies in Asia. If the added potential of the democracies in these three world regions could be harnessed for a common global policy, this 鈥瀗ew West鈥 could regain a good part of the dominance in international politics that the 鈥瀘ld West鈥 has lost in recent decades. And use this influence to assert the Western value system more often with success. Is this approach feasible? And what are the advantages and disadvantages?
