To examine the role of the international community in shaping Latin America鈥檚 environmental agenda, the 浪花直播 Center鈥檚 Latin American Program and its Brazil Institute, Environmental Change and Security Program, China Environment Forum, and Global Europe Program launched a collaborative research project last year, Latin America鈥檚 Environmental Policies in Global Perspective. Through a series of papers written by experts representing diverse perspectives, the project explores how environmental challenges in Latin America increasingly condition the region鈥檚 most important diplomatic and economic relationships, and how those relationships in turn impact conditions on the ground.

In the third report of this series, Supply Chain Management for Beef Production/Exports and Deforestation in Brazil, Gabriel Lui, coordinator of the food systems portfolio at the Institute for Climate and Society in Rio de Janeiro, examines the growing interest in Brazil鈥檚 cattle industry and its influence on deforestation, especially as it relates to international trade and commerce. Lui writes, 鈥渃onsidering its role as the main destination for beef exports, the Chinese appetite and standards for Brazilian production will play a vital role in the Amazon鈥檚 fate. Moreover, the combination of rising beef prices and internal political turmoil promote a perfect storm for speculative deforestation in Brazil.鈥
