Europe Scrambles to Bolster Defense in the Aftermath of US Pausing Support for Ukraine

EU leaders are meeting in Brussels to discuss expanding defense spending and protection after President Trump suspended US military aid to Ukraine. While proposals for increased European defense investment are on the table, questions remain about whether these measures can be enacted quickly enough to make a difference on the battlefield.

At the same time, UK Defense Secretary John Healey is in Washington for discussions with his counterpart in an effort to make headway on a possible peace plan and reinforce the transatlantic relationship. Baroness Catherine Ashton provides insights on the goals of the emergency talks in Brussels. She covers Ursula von der Leyen鈥檚 proposal to increase defense funding for EU member states, Prime Minister Keir Starmer鈥檚 balancing act of strengthening the transatlantic relationship with the US while also supporting Ukraine, and how Britain is asserting its relevance in European security discussions.
