Fighting in the eastern DRC continues as the M23 rebel group consolidates control over the Lake Kivu region and clashes with government forces. Most recently, hopes of a ceasefire through Angola-brokered peace talks have stalled as M23 pulled out of negotiations to be held in Luanda today, citing EU sanctions. Along with these developments, a humanitarian crisis is growing rapidly as M23 seizes territory in the mineral-rich region.
For an update on recent events and their implications for regional security, we spoke with Father Rigobert Minani of the Centre d'Etudes Pour l'Action Sociale in Kinshasa, DRC. We last spoke with Fr. Minani in January following the outbreak of fighting between DRC and rebel forces.
Be sure to check out additional resources from the Africa Program on conflict and cycles of violence in the DRC.
