Expert Bio

For over a decade, Valery Panyushkin worked as a special correspondent for the

Kommersant publishing house, where he wrote major reports on wars, disasters, and

social protests in Russia and around the world. His piece on the special laboratory in

Rostov-on-Don, which worked on identifying the bodies of soldiers who had died in the

Chechen war, was cited 20 years later by Dmitry Muratov in his Nobel Peace Prize

speech. Panyushkin has written for Vedomosti, Gazeta.ru, GQ, Esquire, and other

publications. In 2001, he received the Russian Golden Quill award for a series of pieces in Gazeta.ru. He is the author of 13 fiction and nonfiction books. In 2008, he co- authored the book Gazprom: The New Russian Weapon with Mikhail Zygar and Irina Reznik. That book was translated into many European languages, but few people heeded its warning that Europe鈥檚 reliance on Russian gas was dangerous. Panyushkin has written a lot about health care and charity and produced two documentaries on blood cancer: White Blood and Oleg Tinkov: The New Blood. He was the chief editor of the Takie Dela portal, which focuses on social problems. He also worked with Mikhail Zygar鈥檚 Mobile Art Theater project and wrote two scripts for it, one about the film They Met in Moscow and one about the poet Olga Bergholz. In 2021, Panyushkin co-created

the Cell #18 project on torture in Belarus, which received the Journalism as a Profession award. In 2022, Panyushkin wrote a book about the refugees of the war in Ukraine.
